Englannilla on vahva asema l\u00e4hes pakollisena ensimm\u00e4isen\u00e4 kielen\u00e4, kun taas vapaaehtoisten kielten opiskelu on v\u00e4hentynyt. Kehityksen suuntaa on koetettu k\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4\u00e4 erilaisilla projekteilla ja esimerkiksi kielisuihkuttamalla oppilaita. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, miten koululaiset suhtautuvat englannin, saksan, ranskan ja ven\u00e4j\u00e4n kieliin sek\u00e4 voisiko kielisuihkutukseen osallistuminen antaa oppilaille parempia valmiuksia valita muitakin kieli\u00e4 englannin lis\u00e4ksi. \r\nMotivaatio on yksi t\u00e4rkeimmist\u00e4 kielivalintaan vaikuttavista tekij\u00f6ist\u00e4, joten tutkimus hy\u00f6dynsi motivaatiotutkimuksen perinteit\u00e4 ja metodeja.\r\n\r\nTutkimusote oli m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llinen ja aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin kyselylomakkeella. Lopulliseen aineistoon kuuluivat vastaukset 239 oppilaalta, joista 103 oli osallistunut ranskan kielisuihkutukseen. Vertailuryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 oli 136 oppilasta. Oppilaat olivat aineistonkeruun aikaan viides-, kuudes- ja seitsem\u00e4sluokkalaisia. Analyysiss\u00e4 pyrittiin paitsi kuvaamaan oppilaiden suhtautumista kyselyn kieliin, my\u00f6s etsim\u00e4\u00e4n eroja kielisuihkutettujen ja muiden oppilaiden v\u00e4lill\u00e4.\r\n\r\nTutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 oppilaat olivat enimm\u00e4kseen hyvin motivoituneita opiskelemaan englantia. Englanti sai kaikilla asteikoilla korkeimmat pisteet, oppilaat olivat valmiita n\u00e4kem\u00e4\u00e4n eniten vaivaa sen oppimiseksi ja se oli my\u00f6s selv\u00e4sti suosituin kielivalinta. Saksa ja ranska arvioitiin varsin neutraalisti, mutta asenteet ven\u00e4j\u00e4\u00e4 kohtaan olivat melko negatiivisia. Kielisuihkutukseen osallistuneet oppilaat suhtautuivat merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti positiivisemmin ranskaa ja osittain my\u00f6s saksaa kohtaan kuin vertailuryhm\u00e4. N\u00e4m\u00e4 oppilaat my\u00f6s ilmaisivat useammin haluavansa oppia ranskaa. Tytt\u00f6jen suhtautuminen kieli\u00e4 ja niiden opiskelua kohtaan oli selv\u00e4sti my\u00f6nteisempi kuin poikien. Englanti, saksa, ranska ja ruotsi olivat ne kielet, joita oppilaat useimmiten haluaisivat oppia. Englannin valinnan motiivit olivat enimm\u00e4kseen instrumentaalisia, kun taas muun kielen valinnan yleisin syy oli positiivinen asenne ja kiinnostus kielt\u00e4 kohtaan. Muutenkin englannin opiskelumotivaatiossa painottui instrumentaalinen orientaatio. Tulosten perusteella kielisuihkutukseen osallistuminen parantaa oppilaiden suhtautumista ainakin suihkutettavaa kielt\u00e4 kohtaan. Englannin asemaan suosituimpana kielell\u00e4 sill\u00e4 ei ole vaikutusta.
