Lihasaktiivisuus on kuitenkin edellytys liikkeen synnylle, joten lihasaktiivisuuden mittaaminen reisilihaksista on suora menetelm\u00e4 fyysisen aktiivisuuden m\u00e4\u00e4ritt\u00e4miseen. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli arvioida normaaliv\u00e4est\u00f6n p\u00e4ivitt\u00e4ist\u00e4 lihas-aktiivisuutta kes\u00e4ll\u00e4 ja talvella. Kaksitoista koehenkil\u00f6\u00e4 suoritti mittaukset molempina vuodenaikoina. Mittaukset sis\u00e4lsiv\u00e4t simuloituja p\u00e4ivitt\u00e4isi\u00e4 askareita laboratorio-oloissa ja maksimaalisen isometrisen tahdonalaisen suorituksen (MVC) ja yhdest\u00e4 kolmeen mittausp\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4 normaalissa el\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4 kentt\u00e4oloissa. Lihaksen s\u00e4hk\u00f6ist\u00e4 aktiivisuutta, elektromyografia (EMG), mitattiin reisilihaksista shortseilla, joihin oli ommeltu tekstiilielektrodit lahkeisiin. Lihasaktiivisuudesta analysoitiin useita muuttujia, kuten aktiivisuus- ja inaktiivisuusjaksojen kestoja, amplitudia, pinta-alaa ja aktiivisuusjaksojen tiheytt\u00e4.\nLihasaktiivisuus oli keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin suurempaa talvella kuin kes\u00e4ll\u00e4 (p > 0.05), sill\u00e4 murtomaahiihto oli koehenkil\u00f6iden keskuudessa suosituin liikuntamuoto. Muscles create the bodily movement and thigh muscles are one of the main locomotor movers. Thus measuring muscle activity from thigh muscles is a direct method for measuring physical activity. This study aimed to assess daily physical activity among normal population in winter and summer seasons. Twelve subjects completed measurements in both seasons, which included simulated daily activity tests and maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) in laboratory conditions and 1-3 days of field measurements. Electromyography (EMG) was measured from thigh muscles using shorts with embedded EMG electrodes. Several variables of muscle activity were analyzed and inactivity and activity period durations were calculated among other burst variables.\nThe average muscle activity was higher during the winter than in the summer (p<0.05) because cross-country skiing was the most popular sport among the subjects. Overweight subjects and subjects who reported their average sitting time to be more than 40 % of the working day had significantly lower muscle activity in activity levels over 5 % of MVC, but higher percentage of total daily activity in below 5 % of MVC. The same groups also had significantly longer total inactivity durations and longest inactivity periods than normal weight subjects, or subjects who used less than 40 % of their working day sitting. Energy expenditure was also estimated from EMG based on the correlation between EMG and oxygen uptake on a treadmill walking test. The subjects had mean daily metabolic equivalent hours (MET) 49,2 \u00b1 13,4 that corresponds to 13 858 \u00b1 3805 kJ.\nAs a conclusion the subjects had on average 75 % of the daily muscle activity below 5 % of MVC, which corresponds to light activities such as sitting and standing. This is alarmingly high amount of time and the amount was only altered 16,8 % when performing ball games in comparison to a normal day. In future studies it would be useful to study effects of physical activity at work places on total daily physical activity level and inactivity times.
