Tässä tutkimuksessa tutkittiin kalojen sumputuskokeilla sekä laboratorioaltistuksella, onko raakku sopeutunut eri populaatioissa eri isäntäkaloihin ja onko populaatioissa sopeutumista paikalliseen isäntäpopulaatioon. Lisäksi tutkittiin vierasperäisen puronieriän (Salvelinus fontinalis Mitchill) soveltuvuutta raakkujen isännäksi. Tutkimuspopulaatioiksi valittiin Livojoen raakkupopulaatio, jonka alueella on ennen vesistörakentamista tavattu lohta (Salmo salar L.) sekä 5 puron raakkupopulaatiot, joiden isäntäkala on luultavasti aina ollut taimen (Salmo trutta L.). Tutkimuspopulaatiot sijaitsevat Iijoen vesistöalueella. Neljässä viidestä taimenpurosta taimenkannat olivat glokidium-toukkamäärillä mitattuna lohta soveltuvampia isäntiä raakulle. Yhdessä purossa merkitsevää eroa lohen ja taimenkantojen välillä ei ollut. Livojoella lohi osoittautui soveltuvammaksi isännäksi kuin mikään kokeilluista taimenkannoista. Paikallinen taimenkanta ei osoittautunut raakkupopulaatioille muita taimenkantoja paremmaksi isännäksi. Toisin kuin oletettiin, paikallinen taimen osoittautui kahdessa neljästä taimenpurosta muita taimenkantoja huonommaksi isännäksi. Tämä voi viitata siihen, että näissä puroissa isäntä onkin sopeutunut paikalliseen raakkuun eikä päinvastoin. Puronieriä ei osoittautunut soveltuvaksi isännäksi tutkituille raakkupopulaatioille. Tämän tutkimuksen tulokset viittaavat siihen, että eri raakkupopulaatiot voivat olla sopeutuneita eri isäntäkalalajeihin, mikä tulee huomioida raakun suojelutyössä ja populaatioiden elvytyksessä. Freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritfera L.) is one of the most endangered aquatic animals in Europe. Freshwater pearl mussel lives part of its life as a parasite on the salmonid fish, so detailed knowledge of the host specificity of this species is needed for conservation actions. The aim of this study was to investigate host specificity differences and patterns of local adaptation between freshwater pearl mussel populations. I also studied suitability of the introduced brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis Mitchill) as a host for freshwater pearl mussel. Studied mussel populations were from river Iijoki catchment area; River Livojoki which used to inhabit Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) population prior to construction of water powerplants and 5 tributaries in which the host has propably always been brown trout (Salmo trutta L.). Methods included cage experiments in the field and a laboratory exposure experiment. In 4 of the 5 small streams different trout strains were more suitable hosts for freshwater pearl mussels than salmon (measured as abundance of glochidia), while in one stream salmon did not differ from the trout strains. In river Livojoki salmon was more suitable host for mussels than any of the tested trout strains. Local trout strain was not more suitable host for mussel populations than other trout strains. In two streams local trout strain was even less suitable host than non-local strains, which may indicate local adaptation by the host rather than by the parasite. Brook trout was not suitable host for studied freshwater pearl mussel populations. The results suggest that different freshwater pearl mussel populations could be adapted to different host species. These results thus have important implications for management and conservation of the freshwater pearl mussel populations. The possibility that different freshwater pearl mussel populations are adapted to different host species should be better recognised in management and conservation plans.
