Lis\u00e4ksi tutkittiin, onko viittomakielisten saama opetus kaksikielist\u00e4\nopetusta vai \u00e4idinkielen ja toisen kielen opetusta. Suomalainen viittomakieli\ntoimii v\u00e4hemmist\u00f6kielen\u00e4. Tutkimuksessa keskitytettiin viittomakielisten\nkuurojen ja huonokuuloisten peruskoulutukseen, sill\u00e4 viittomakieliset kuulevat\novat k\u00e4yneet valtakielt\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4vi\u00e4 kouluja.\nTutkimuksessa haastateltiin Kuopion kuuromykk\u00e4inkoulun k\u00e4yneit\u00e4\nviittomakielisi\u00e4 kuuroja miehi\u00e4 ja Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston\nopettajankoulutuslaitoksen viittomakielisi\u00e4 luokanopettajaopiskelijoita.\nHaastatteluaineistoa analysoitiin teemoittamisen avulla.\nTutkimuksen tulosten mukaan suomalainen viittomakieli \u00e4idinkielen\u00e4 on\nedelleen uusi asia koulumaailmassa ja my\u00f6s opettajankoulutuksessa.\nViittomakielisen luokanopettajakoulutuksen sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4 tulee kehitt\u00e4\u00e4, sill\u00e4\nnykyisen kaltainen integroituminen yleiseen opettajankoulutukseen ei edist\u00e4\nriitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti viittomakielisten luokanopettaja-opiskelijoiden kaksi- ja monikielist\u00e4\nopettajuutta. Kaksi- ja monikielinen opetusidea ei ole kotiutunut riitt\u00e4v\u00e4n hyvin\nsuomalaiseen koulutusj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4\u00e4n. Suomalainen viittomakieli tarvitsee\nmuiden v\u00e4hemmist\u00f6kielten lailla kielisuojaohjelman. Opetusministeri\u00f6n tulisi\ntehd\u00e4 laaja kartoitusty\u00f6 viittomakielisten saamasta peruskoulutuksesta ja\nomakielisen opetuksen tarpeesta.
