Oppilaiden kokemukset karttuivat Comenius projektissa EU ja min\u00e4. Kaikki viisi haastateltua lasta olivat oppilaina samassa Pohjois-Pohjanmaalla sijaitsevassa koulussa, ja osallistuivat samoille kolmeen eri EU-maahan suuntautuneille opintomatkoille. Kaikki oppilaat matkustivat oppilasparin kanssa, ja kokivat samantyyppisi\u00e4 tapahtumia. Nelj\u00e4 viidest\u00e4 tutkimukseen osallistuneesta oppilaasta is\u00e4nn\u00f6i perheess\u00e4\u00e4n ulkomaalaista oppilasta, ja tutkin my\u00f6s heid\u00e4n mahdollisia positiivisia kokemuksiaan is\u00e4nn\u00f6innist\u00e4.\r\n\r\nTutkimukseni l\u00e4hdekirjallisuutena ja vertailuaineistona k\u00e4yt\u00e4n lyhytaikaista ulkomailla oleskelua, kokemuksien kautta oppimista ja muita siihen liittyvi\u00e4 ilmi\u00f6it\u00e4 tarkastelleita akateemisia tutkimuksia. Edell\u00e4 mainittujen tutkimusten tuntemus on olennaista kasvattajille, jotka vet\u00e4v\u00e4t ulkomaille suuntautuvia opintomatkoja. Aikaisempien tutkimuksien avulla oli mahdollista todeta ulkomaille suuntautuvien lyhytaikaisten opintomatkojen osallistujien kohtaamisia useita haasteita, ja niiden tulokset auttoivat k\u00e4sill\u00e4 olevan tutkimuksen kyselyn rakenteen muodostamisessa. Tutkimuskirjallisuus kattaa my\u00f6s t\u00e4rkeimm\u00e4t tutkimustani l\u00e4hell\u00e4 olevat teoriat, esimerkiksi, ett\u00e4 kokemuksen kautta oppiminen tuottaa hyvi\u00e4 tuloksia.\r\n\r\nOsallistujia haastateltiin vapaamuotoisesti k\u00e4sitellen seuraavia teemoja: haastateltavan tausta, kokemukset ennen matkaa, kokemukset matkan aikana, kokemukset matkan j\u00e4lkeen ja kokonaiskokemuksen arviointi. Kaikki matkat kestiv\u00e4t nelj\u00e4 y\u00f6t\u00e4 ja viisi p\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4 ja tapahtuivat saman Comenius-projektin (EU ja min\u00e4) puitteissa. Projektissa oli mukana yhdeks\u00e4n EU-maata. Oppilaiden kokemukset olivat asumisesta is\u00e4nt\u00e4perheiss\u00e4 Espanjassa, Slovakiassa ja Italiassa. Haastattelut tehtiin suomen kielell\u00e4 ja k\u00e4\u00e4nnettiin englanniksi aineiston analysoimista varten. Narratiivien ker\u00e4\u00e4misen j\u00e4lkeen aineisto jaoteltiin edell\u00e4 mainittuihin kategorioihin varhaisnuorten kokemusten vertailemiseksi ja vastakohtaistamiseksi. \r\n\r\nAnalyysiss\u00e4 tutkimustulokset on j\u00e4rjestetty temaattisesti lyhyiksi selityksiksi, joita selvent\u00e4v\u00e4t taulukot. Tutkimuksen aineisto on j\u00e4rjestetty siten, ett\u00e4 se osoittaa jokaisen osallistujan kokemusten saman- tai erikaltaisuuden suhteessa osallistujan taustaan, huoleen, asennoitumiseen englannin kielen puhumiseen, stereotyyppeihin ja uskomuksiin ulkomaalaisten kohtaamisesta, odotuksiin, koti-ik\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4n, kulttuurisiin eroavaisuuksiin ja positiivisiin muutoksiin suhteessa edell\u00e4 mainittuihin ulkomailla oleskelun seurauksena.\r\n\r\nTulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 oppilaiden kokemukset is\u00e4nt\u00e4perheist\u00e4 eri maissa olivat positiivisia huolimatta siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 kommunikoimisessa englannin kielell\u00e4 oli jonkin verran vaikeuksia. Kaikki tutkimukseen osallistuneet oppilaat kertoivat, ett\u00e4 heid\u00e4n englannin kieli taitonsa oli parantunut opintomatkojen seurauksena ja ett\u00e4 kokemus tilanteista, jossa englannin kielt\u00e4 joutui k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n, oli positiivinen. The five participants were all students from the same northwestern school in Finland and travelled to three foreign countries for the same amount of time. All students travelled with a partner student and experienced similar types of events. Four of the five students experienced hosting a foreign student in their own country and their experiences are examined for positive effects.\r\nThe background section of the study examines previous research in relation to sojourn challenges, learning through experience and other related phenomenon found in previous studies that educators need to be aware of when carrying out study abroad programs. Through the examples of previous research, it was found that many challenges are faced by the participants of sojourn travels, and these challenges aided in the construction of the interview questions for the present study. The background also covers important theories related to the present study, for example, learning by actually providing experience is beneficial. It is also clear, from previous work that reflection about sojourn experiences is important in order to process the effects of the experiences themselves.\r\nThe set-up of the present study is composed of sections dealing with separate parts of the sojourns. Participants were interviewed by using semi-structured interviews dealing with the following themes: background, pre-sojourn, sojourn, post-sojourn and reflection. All the sojourn experiences were based on the four night and five day sojourns that these five students experienced in the Comenius Project EU & I. Nine countries in the European United Nations were involved in the project. The students\u2019 experiences range from living in host families in Spain, Slovakia and Italy. The narratives gathered by the interviewer were in the Finnish language and then translated into English for the analysis of the data. After gathering the narratives, the information was divided into the above mentioned themes to compare and contrast the experiences of the adolescent participants. \r\nIn the analysis, findings were arranged by short explanations followed by a table about each subject within a theme, so that the information was clear. The data in the study is set up in order to show how each participant\u2019s experience was similar or different in regards to issues such as background, anxiety, attitudes about using English, stereotypes and beliefs, expectations, homesickness, cultural differences and positive changes as a result of the sojourn.\r\nThe findings show that the students had positive experiences with their host families in the different foreign countries even though there was some difficulty with communication in English. All of the students explained that their English had improved as a result of the sojourn and that being in the situation of having to use L2 was positive.
