Nuorisokulttuuri on kansainv\u00e4list\u00e4 ja sen yhteinen kieli on entist\u00e4 useammin englanti. Uuden teknologian kehittymisen my\u00f6t\u00e4 monimediaiset ja monikulttuuriset englanninkieliset tekstiymp\u00e4rist\u00f6t ovat entist\u00e4 useammin osa nuorten arkea. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, miten hy\u00f6dyllisin\u00e4 englannin oppimisen kannalta kahdeksasluokkalaiset nuoret kokevat erilaiset tekstik\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6t koulun ulkopuolella arkitodellisuudessaan. Tutkimuksessa etsit\u00e4\u00e4n vastauksia seuraaviin kysymyksiin: 1) Mitk\u00e4 koulun ulkopuoliset tekstik\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6t tukevat englannin oppimista? 2) Millaisia yht\u00e4l\u00e4isyyksi\u00e4 ja eroja oppilaiden ja oppilasryhmien v\u00e4lill\u00e4 ilmenee? 3) Mik\u00e4 oppilaita motivoi eri k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6iss\u00e4? 4) Millaista englantia oppilaat kokevat oppivansa vapaa-ajan k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ist\u00e4? Tutkimus kiinnitet\u00e4\u00e4n teoreettisesti informaaliseen oppimiseen ja sosiokulttuuriseen n\u00e4kemykseen tekstik\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ist\u00e4. Metodologisesti tutkimusteht\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 l\u00e4hestyt\u00e4\u00e4n kahta eri metodia yhdist\u00e4en. P\u00e4\u00e4metodina k\u00e4ytettiin oppilaskysely\u00e4, johon yhden koulun kaikki kahdeksasluokkalaiset (78 oppilasta) vastasivat. T\u00e4m\u00e4n aineiston perusteella vastataan kahteen ensimm\u00e4iseen tutkimuskysymykseen. Kyselyaineisto analysoitiin tilastollisesti. Ryhmittelyanalyysin perusteella valittiin 10 oppilasta haastatteluun, jonka tarkoituksena oli tarkentaa ja valottaa oppilaiden kokemuksia ja vastata kahteen viimeiseen tutkimuskysymykseen. Haastatteluaineistoa tarkastellaan laadullisesti.\r\n Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 nuorten sek\u00e4 kiinnostavimmiksi ett\u00e4 englannin oppimisessa hy\u00f6dyllisimmiksi kokemat tekstik\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6t ovat monimediaisia, viihteellisi\u00e4 ja sosiaalista kanssak\u00e4ymist\u00e4 mahdollistavia. Erityisesti television, elokuvien, Youtube-videoiden katselu sek\u00e4 musiikin kuuntelu, pelailu sek\u00e4 netiss\u00e4 ja kasvokkain keskustelu koetaan hy\u00f6dyllisimmiksi. Perinteisi\u00e4 painettuja tekstej\u00e4 luetaan harvoin. Eroja ilmenee jonkin verran tytt\u00f6jen ja poikien sek\u00e4 eri tasoilla englantia osaavien ja eri tavoin asennoituvien nuorten kokemuksissa. Oppilaista erottuu my\u00f6s erilaisia osaryhmi\u00e4, joiden kiinnostuksen kohteet ja oppimiskokemukset vaihtelevat: TV:n ja videoiden katselijoita, pelaajia, nettikeskustelijoita ja kasvokkain juttelevia sek\u00e4 monimedia-aktiiveja. Oppilaat kokivat oppivansa eniten englanninkielisist\u00e4 elokuvista, peleist\u00e4 ja keskusteluista arkip\u00e4iv\u00e4n ja nuorten k\u00e4ytt\u00f6kielt\u00e4, \u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4mist\u00e4, erityissanastoa, lauserakenteita sek\u00e4 kielen k\u00e4yt\u00f6n erilaisia mahdollisuuksia. Kirjoja lukevat tyt\u00f6t, jotka olivat useimmiten monimedia-aktiiveja, oppivat my\u00f6s kirjoittamista, kirjakielt\u00e4 ja oikeinkirjoitusta.
