Selvit\u00e4n tutkimuksessani ruoan merkityssis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4 toisen kulttuurin kokemisessa ja tutkin ruoan tarjoamaa rajapintaa kulttuurien v\u00e4lisess\u00e4 vuorovaikutuksessa. Kuvailen my\u00f6s mink\u00e4laista singaporelainen monikulttuurisuusdiskurssi on ja miten monikulttuurisuus ilmenee singaporelaisten kulttuuri-identiteetiss\u00e4. \n\nTutkimuksessa olen k\u00e4ytt\u00e4nyt triangulatiivista eli moniaineistoista metodia. Aineistoni koostuu eri tavoin toteutetuista tutkimushaastatteluista, joista osan toteutin kasvotusten ja osan virtuaalisia menetelmi\u00e4, kuten internet-kysely\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4en, sek\u00e4 tekem\u00e4st\u00e4ni kentt\u00e4ty\u00f6matkasta Singaporeen. \n\nSingapore on monikulttuurinen kaupunkivaltio, jonka v\u00e4est\u00f6 koostuu useasta eri etnisest\u00e4 ryhm\u00e4st\u00e4. Suurin osa v\u00e4est\u00f6st\u00e4 omaa kiinalaisen, malesialaisen tai intialaisen taustan, mutta my\u00f6s muita etnisi\u00e4 ryhmi\u00e4 esiintyy. Singaporessa vallitsee p\u00e4\u00e4osin hyvin suvaitseva monikulttuurisuusdiskurssi. Singaporelaiset kasvatetaan monikulttuurisuuteen ja harmoniasta pidet\u00e4\u00e4n huolta my\u00f6s valtiollisin toimin. Pinnan alta voidaan kuitenkin l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 jonkinasteisia negaatioita muita kulttuureja kohtaan. Varsinkaan maahan hiljattain tulleet uudemmat etniset ryhm\u00e4t eiv\u00e4t saa aina yht\u00e4 varauksetonta hyv\u00e4ksynt\u00e4\u00e4, kuin saarella kauemmin esiintyneet kulttuurit. \n\nMonikulttuurisuus n\u00e4kyy vahvasti my\u00f6s Singaporen ruokakulttuurissa. Singaporelainen ruoka on monimuotoista, sill\u00e4 se on saanut ominaispiirteens\u00e4 maahan asettuneiden etnisten ryhmien keitti\u00f6ist\u00e4. Ruoka- ja hawker -keskuksilla on t\u00e4rke\u00e4 rooli singaporelaisessa kulttuurissa. Ne ovat keskittymi\u00e4, joissa on tarjolla laajasti eri kulttuurien ruokia. Keskukset mahdollistavat toisista kulttuureista oppimisen ruoan avulla, ja antavat etnisille ryhmille tilaisuuden sy\u00f6d\u00e4 yhdess\u00e4, vaikka nautittaisiinkin erityyppisi\u00e4 ruokia. Kulttuurien v\u00e4lill\u00e4 on eroja ruokailutottumuksissa ja n\u00e4m\u00e4 erot singaporelaiset oppivat yhteiskunnassaan. Singaporelaiset arvostavat ruokaansa ja nostavat sen yhdeksi t\u00e4rkeimm\u00e4ksi elementiksi omassa kulttuurissaan. Ruoka ilment\u00e4\u00e4 ja yll\u00e4pit\u00e4\u00e4 singaporelaista monikulttuurisuutta, mutta sen avulla luodaan my\u00f6s yhten\u00e4ist\u00e4 kulttuuri-identiteetti\u00e4.
