Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan oikeiden \u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4mistottumusten roolia kieltenopiskelussa. Siin\u00e4 luodaan my\u00f6s katsaus aikaisempiin kokemuksin foneettisen tarkekirjoituksen pedagogisesta k\u00e4yt\u00f6st\u00e4. Lopuksi esitell\u00e4\u00e4n pienimuotoinen, foneettisten merkkien pedagogista arvoa tutkiva empiirinen tutkimus..\r\nTutkimuksessa vertailtiin jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4l\u00e4isen koulun kahta nelj\u00e4nnen luokan rinnakkaisryhm\u00e4\u00e4, joista toiselle pidettiin 45 minuutin mittainen, foneettisten merkkien tulkintaa ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 koskeva oppitunti. Kokelaita my\u00f6s kehotettiin seuraavien viikkojen ajan k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n hy\u00f6dyksi oppimaansa tietoa uusien sanojen opiskelussa tulevaa tutkimusryhm\u00e4n j\u00e4rjest\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4 sanakoetta varten. Verrokkiryhm\u00e4lle vastaavaa opetusta ja ohjeistusta ei annettu. Kahden viikon kuluttua molemmat ryhm\u00e4t osallistuivat suulliseen sanakokeeseen, jossa heid\u00e4n oli m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 tunnistaa \u00e4\u00e4ninauhalta koetta varten r\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4l\u00f6idyst\u00e4 keskustelusta sanoja, jotka kuuluivat oppilaille etuk\u00e4teen ilmoitetun sanakokeen sanastoon. Verrokkiryhm\u00e4lle ei ollut annettu ennakkotietoa kokeen suullisesta luonteesta kuten opetusta saaneelle ryhm\u00e4lle. Hypoteesina oli, ett\u00e4 opetusta saanut ryhm\u00e4 suoriutuisi kokeesta opetuksen ansiosta keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin paremmin tuloksin kuin verrokkiryhm\u00e4\r\nSaadut tulosluvut eiv\u00e4t t-testin mukaan ole tilastollisesti merkitt\u00e4vi\u00e4. Tulokset viittaavat kuitenkin siihen, ett\u00e4 suomalaisilla lapsilla on usein vaikeuksia havaita ja tuottaa soinnillinen s-\u00e4\u00e4nne, /z/, kuten aikaisempi tutkimus on jo aiemmin osoittanut.
