One of the three phases of the working memory process is retrieval, which means actively bringing previously encoded information back into the processing stage. Research evidence indicates activation of the frontal lobes in particular during the retrieval phase. Examining the relationship between neural activity and reaction times using short and efficient experimental designs offers important insights into the function of working memory. These insights can be applied in fu-ture research and clinical contexts. \nIn this study, neural activity in the frontal lobe during Sternberg task is examined and compared with the reaction times. The participants (N=22) were measured using magnetoencephalography (MEG) while they were performing a task in which they were asked to memorise number sequences of two and four digits. After this, a single probe digit appeared on the screen, and the participants were supposed to recall whether it had been present in the previously shown number sequence or not. While analysing, the brain activity connected to fast and slow responses were compared with each other in different task conditions. \nThe results demonstrate that processing long number sequences took longer compared to the short ones. In turn, the stimuli that matched the memory content were processed faster than those that did not. Comparing the fast and slow responses, statistically significant differences were detected in the long match and short non-match conditions in all observed brain areas. In light of these results, it can be stated that the complex nature of working memory can successfully be studied by combining neural and behavioural data.", "language": "en", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.provenance", "value": "Submitted by Miia Hakanen (mihakane@jyu.fi) on 2025-06-23T07:07:32Z\nNo. of bitstreams: 0", "language": "en", "element": "description", "qualifier": "provenance", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.provenance", "value": "Made available in DSpace on 2025-06-23T07:07:32Z (GMT).
