Psychophysiological responses and cognitive appraisals of emotional faces the role of electrodermal and facial muscle activity

This study explored physiological reactivity and emotional face recognition and appraisal in response to live facial expressions, with a focus on the role of anxiety and depression symptoms. While physiological reactivity to and appraisal of emotional faces is often studied using static images, this study aimed to enhance ecological validity by using live face models. Participants (N = 25) viewed a face model through a liquid crystal screen (LCS) that revealed sad, angry, or neutral expressions. Skin conductance response (SCR) and facial electromyography (EMG) were recorded, along with behavioral measures of emotion recognition and perceived intensity. Higher SCR to sad and neutral faces was associated with better recognition accuracy of sad expressions. A trend also suggested that stronger SCR was linked to greater perceived intensity of sad faces. EMG responses varied by emotion: zygomatic activity was highest during sad and neutral faces, while corrugator activity was lowest during angry faces. Notably, greater EMG activity to neutral expressions — both zygomatic and corrugator — was linked to a worse recognition accuracy of neutral faces. No significant differences were found between participants with higher versus lower anxiety and depression symptoms in either physiological responses or behavioral outcomes. These findings suggest that individual physiological reactivity, rather than symptom severity, may support or interfere with accurate emotional face recognition and appraisal — particularly for sad and neutral expressions. Future research should explore these associations in larger or clinical populations.
