description This master’s thesis examines how key stakeholders retrospectively made sense of the strategic vision presented before the 1999 merger of two Finnish media companies, Sanoma and WSOY. In the media before the merger, it was presented as a strategic move toward creating a competitive and international media group. However, all the original strategic visions were not realized as planned in the merger’s outcomes. This research investigates how the publicly presented vision of the merger’s strategy was made sense of by the key stakeholders and whether the strategic vision remained a reference point in later interpretations when the key stakeholders reconstructed its meaning over time. This qualitative research draws on data from Finnish media & newspapers and from 12 interviews with top- and middle management from the companies involved in the merger. Guided by the Gioia methodology within a grounded theory framework, the analysis identifies sensemaking strategies that stakeholders used to bridge the gap between the originally presented vision and the occurred outcomes. Findings show that the key stakeholders engaged in sensemaking strategies such as sensegiving, sensebreaking, sensehiding and sense specification to align their narratives with how the merger unfolded. The public narrative of the merger remained to exist and influenced the retrospective interpretations and conversations over 20 years after the merger. This research contributes to understanding the dynamic and temporal nature of sensemaking and sensegiving in organizational change. It highlights how public narratives in mergers can continue to shape stakeholder interpretations over time and give insights that are relevant to the field of interpretive organizational research. Tämä pro gradu- tutkimus tarkastelee, kuinka keskeiset sidosryhmät rakensivat merkitystä, retrospektiivisesti Sanoman ja WSOY:n välisen 1999 vuoden yritysfuusion, julkisuudessa esitetystä strategisesta visiosta. Mediassa fuusio esitettiin strategisena liikkeenä, jonka tavoitteena oli luoda kilpailukykyinen ja kansainvälinen mediakonserni. Kaikkia alkuperäisiä suunniteltuja strategisia visioita ei saavutettu fuusion jälkeen. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, kuinka fuusion julkisesti esitetty strateginen visio ymmärrettiin ja käsiteltiin jälkikäteen keskeisten sidosryhmien toimesta, ja säilyikö kyseinen visio viitekehyksenä myöhemmässä tulkinnassa, kun sen merkitystä rakennettiin uudelleen ajan myötä. Tämä laadullinen tutkimus pohjautuu suomalaisesta mediasta ja sanomalehdistä kerättyyn aineistoon sekä 12 haastatteluun, joissa haastateltiin fuusioon osallistuneiden yritysten ylintä- ja keskijohtoa. Gioia metodologian ja aineistopohjaisen teorian avulla analyysissä tunnistettiin keskeisiä merkityksenantostrategioita, joita sidosryhmät käyttivät kuroakseen umpeen kuilua alkuperäisen vision ja toteutuneiden tulosten välillä. Tulokset osoittavat, että sidosryhmät hyödynsivät muun muassa merkityksen anto-, merkityksen rikkomis-, merkityksen piilottamis-, sekä merkityksen tarkentamisstrategioita muokatakseen narratiiviaan suhteessa fuusion todellisiin lopputuloksiin. Fuusion julkinen narratiivi säilyi ja vaikutti retrospektiivisiin tulkintoihin ja keskusteluihin haastatteluissa vielä yli 20 vuotta fuusion jälkeen. Tutkimus syventää ymmärrystä merkityksen teon ja sen antamisen dynaamisesta ja ajallisesta luonteesta organisaatiomuutoksissa. Se osoittaa, kuinka julkiset narratiivit yritysfuusioiden yhteydessä voivat vaikuttaa pitkään sidosryhmien tulkintoihin ja tarjoaa näkökulmia, jotka ovat relevantteja tulkitsevan organisaatiotutkimuksen alalla.
