Pienten kotelosienten monimuotoisuuteen vaikuttavat tekijät tunnetaan yleisesti heikosti. Tämän tutkielman päämääränä oli selvittää Helotiales- sienten monimuotoisuutta luonnollisesti kaatuneilla suurikokoisilla maalahopuilla. Aineistoa kerättiin neljältä eri luonnontilaiselta metsäalueelta Suomesta. Tutkin yhteisötason vasteita mittaamalla Helotialeksien lajirunsautta ja yhteisöjen välisiä eroja suhteessa lahopuun ja ympäristön laatuun liittyviin tekijöihin. Tutkimuksessa inventointiin yhteensä 96 maalahopuuta, jotka edustivat 4 eri puulajia. Tutkimuksen aikana löydettiin yhteensä 129 Helotiales- lajia, joista 64% esiintyi viisi kertaa tai vähemmän. Keskimääräinen lajimäärä rungolla oli 10,5. Tilastollisissa analyyseissä käytin yleistettyjä lineaarisia sekamalleja tutkiessani lajirunsauteen vaikuttavia tekijöitä, ja yhteisöanalyysiä tutkiessani yhteisökoostumukseen vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Sekä Helotialeksien lajirunsauteen että yhteisökoostumukseen vaikuttavat tekijät olivat puulaji, rungon tilavuus ja sammalpeitteisyys. Lisäksi yhteisökoostumukseen vaikuttivat kaarnapeitteisyys ja lahoaste. Vaikutukset vaihtelivat hieman puulajeittain. Tutkimusalueiden tai kosteiden ja kuivien elinympäristötyyppien välillä ei ollut eroja lajirunsaudessa tai yhteisökoostumuksessa. Myöskään populaation horisontaalisella sijainnilla rungolla ei ollut vaikutusta lajirunsauteen tai yhteisökoostumukseen. Tuloksista voidaan päätellä, että Helotialeksien monimuotoisuuteen vaikuttavat tekijät ovat paikallisia ja liittyvät lähinnä lahopuun laatuun. Isokokoisella lahopuulla ja lehtipuulla oli eniten lajeja. Myös lahopuun kosteuspitoisuutta lisäävillä tekijöillä, kuten sammalpeitteisyydellä, oli positiivinen vaikutus lajirunsauteen. Helotiales are a largely unknown group of fungi and one of the most diverse groups of apothecial ascomycetes. Most Helotiales are known to be saprophytic, with a lot of species living on deadwood. The factors affecting the diversity of small ascomycetes are generally poorly understood. In this thesis my goal was to describe the diversity of Helotiales species on naturally downed large-sized deadwood on four different natural forest sites in Finland. In more detail I studied the community level responses in species richness and -composition of Helotiales to different variables related to deadwood and forest quality. A total number of 96 deadwood logs representing 4 different tree species were examined for Helotiales fruitbodies. A total number of 129 species was found on all study logs combined, of which 64 percent appeared five times or less. The average number of species per log was 10,5. I used generalized linear mixed models to study the Helotiales species richness, and Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling with permutation test to study the effects on community composition. The variables that had an effect on Helotiales species richness and community composition on all study logs in general were tree species, log volume and moss coverage. Additionally the variables that affected community composition were bark coverage and decay stage. The effects varied slightly between tree species. There was no difference in species richness or community composition between study sites, wet and dry habitat types or horizontal positions on the log. From these results, it can be concluded that the factors that affect the diversity of Helotiales fungi are mostly local and are closely tied to the quality of deadwood. As earlier studies suggest, larger deadwood hosts more species, as does deciduous deadwood. Qualities that capture moisture in the deadwood, like high moss coverage, also seem to have a positive effect on species richness.
