Tutkimukseen osallistui 27 ensimmäisen luokan oppilasta eräästä keskisuomalaisesta peruskoulusta. Tutkimuksen toteuttamisen aikana oppilaat olivat opiskelleet englantia noin kahden kuukauden ajan. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin teettämällä piirustuksia oppilailla ja haastattelemalla heitä. Haastattelut tehtiin pienryhmähaastatteluina, joiden aikana tutkija kirjasi oppilaiden vastauksia ylös. Haastatteluiden aikana oppilaat saivat kertoa lisää tekemistään piirrustuksista. Tutkimuksen aineisto analysoitiin aineistolähtöisesti refleksiivisen temaattisen analyysin keinoin. Aineiston pohjalta muotoutui viisi teemaa: kulttuurinen yhteys englannin kielen sisäpiirin maihin (esim. Iso-Britannia, Amerikka ja Australia), vapaa-aika ja kiinnostuksen kohteet, tunne-elämä, koulu ja oppiminen sekä fyysiset paikat. Tutkimuksessa selvisi, että suurin vaikutus alkuopetuksen oppilaiden asenteisiin ja kiinnostukseen englannin kieltä kohtaan tulevat heidän omista kiinnostuksen kohteista ja vapaa-ajan tekemisestä. Lisäksi vahvin vaikutus heidän ajatuksiinsa oli maiden, kuten Amerikan ja Iso-Britannian vaikutus esimerkiksi kaikenlaisen median muodossa. Tutkimus pyrkii lisäämään tietoa oppilaiden asenteista ja ajatuksista englannin kieltä kohtaan. Näin pystyisimme parantamaan oppilaiden mahdollisuuksia menestyä englannin kielen opiskelussa. This study aimed to investigate Finnish first-grade students' attitudes and inter-ests towards the English language and its use. The study involved 27 first-grade students from a primary school in central Finland. At the time of the study, the pupils had been studying English for approximately two months. The study was conducted qualitatively. Data were collected by commission-ing drawings from the pupils and interviewing participants regarding the draw-ings and their thoughts on the English language. The interviews took the form of small group interviews, during which the researcher took notes of the pupils' responses. During the interviews, the pupils were allowed to make comments on the drawings they had made. The data was analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Five themes were identified from the data: cultural association with the Inner Circle Countries, free time and interests, emotional indicators, school and learning and physical places. The study found that the most significant influence on primary school pu-pils' attitudes and interest in English comes from their interests and entertain-ment in their free time. In addition, the most substantial influence on their atti-tude and associations was media produced mainly in America and the UK. The study aims to increase knowledge about students' attitudes and thoughts to-wards English to help, for example, teachers and producers of learning materials, create targeted and meaningful lessons and materials. This way, we could im-prove pupils' chances of success in English language learning.
