Technology enhances safety and effectiveness, enabling monitoring of the birth parent and fetus, documentation, communication and consultation among professionals. The process of childbirth care from the perspective of technology and midwifery has not previously been analyzed using the hierarchical task analysis (HTA) method. The aim of this study was to model the role of technology in childbirth care by using HTA to describe the childbirth care process in a task-oriented manner, without including the complex cognitive work of mid-wives. Additionally, the study aimed to map midwives' experiences of techno-logical support in their work during childbirth and to investigate the suitability of the HTA model for describing childbirth care. The study combined two methods: HTA and interviews. The aim of combining these methods was to test a new methodological approach to researching technology. A thematic inter-view method was used, utilizing the HTA model created for the study. Six midwives working in the maternity unit of Sairaala Nova, located in the Central Finland Wellbeing Services County, participated in the interviews. The data were analyzed using a theory-driven analysis. According to the research results, the HTA model describes the process of childbirth care well. The results indicate that technology used in childbirth care is seen as a supportive and safety-enhancing element. However, the study indicates that there are deficiencies in the usability of technological solutions and systems. Particularly, the lack of integration on patient information systems and usability issues pose challenges for professionals providing maternity care. Midwives expressed a desire for the technology used in childbirth care to facilitate data collection, detection, and documentation. This study offers new insights into how technology can be better utilized and developed to meet the needs of healthcare professionals. This study also opens the philosophy of midwifery work and its impact on the use of technology and the expectations placed upon it.
Keywords: hierarchical task analysis (HTA), healthcare technology, usability, childbirth care, midwifery
dc.description.abstract
Synnytyksen hoidossa käytettävän teknologia rooli on merkittävä ja sen tarkoitus on tukea ja auttaa terveydenhuollon ammattihenkilöitä työn toteuttamisessa.
