description Daily activities, such as engaging in conversations, listening to music, or reacting to sounds, rely on the capacity to attend multiple auditory sources while filtering out irrelevant sensory input. This ability to selectively focus on auditory stimuli is closely tied to neural entrainment (NE), a process in which brain oscillations synchronize to the periodicity of external stimuli optimizing neural responses to expected events. This mechanism is thought to support beat and rhythm perception and acts as a neural filter, facilitating the routing of sensory input within neural circuits to support accurate temporal processing. Electrophysiological and behavioral measurements like the auditory steady-state potentials (ASSEPs), the mismatch negativity (MMN) and reaction times (RT), have been employed to examine NE and attention. The present study followed a within-subject design, in which eight participants listened to sequences of two beats with onbeat and offbeat onsets, separated by short and long silent breaks under three listening condition tasks (single, selective and dual). Since NE is regarded as a selective filter for facilitating predictions, this study aims to investigate the occurrence of simultaneous NE in the context of listening to two auditory streams of beats under different listening conditions, as reflected by ASSEPs, and RT. Results reveal that ASSEP responses did not differ between selective and dual conditions, suggesting that participants might have adopted a selective approach in both conditions or that attention doesn’t modulate ASSEPs responses. On the other hand, RT was faster following long silent breaks compared to short ones, suggesting that the listeners were paying more attention to the introductions and relied more on increased expectations over time than beat-based expectations. The implications of these results and limitations are further discussed.
