description Universities of applied sciences play a significant role in promoting responsibility, as they are key actors in achieving sustainable development goals in society. Universities of applied sciences still have untapped potential to increase their impact in advancing the sustainability transition. Teaching plays a central role in this process, as it serves as a channel through which the values and knowledge of responsibility are passed on to future professionals. Integrating themes of responsibility into teaching supports students' ability to address complex environmental and societal challenges. There appears to be a clear connection between teachers' competence in sustainable development and their ability to integrate responsibility themes into their teaching. The deeper a teacher’s understanding of the different dimensions of sustainability, the more easily and comprehensively they can incorporate these themes into their instruction. This highlights the need to invest in developing teachers’ competence. Measuring skill levels provides higher education institutions with insight into the current state and guides development efforts, enabling strategic competence management. In addition to competence, a teacher’s personal interest and motivation also significantly influence how responsibility is integrated into teaching. Incorporating sustainability topics into education requires a working environment where such themes are considered meaningful. Motivating and engaging staff is essential to ensure that responsibility becomes a natural part of teaching and of students’ emerging professional identities. Ammattikorkeakouluilla on merkittävä rooli vastuullisuuden edistämisessä, sillä ne toimivat keskeisinä toimijoina kestävän kehityksen tavoitteiden saavuttamisessa yhteiskunnassa. Ammattikorkeakouluilla on yhä hyödyntämätöntä potentiaalia vaikuttavuutensa kasvattamisessa kestävän murroksen edistämiseksi. Opetuksella on keskeinen asema, sillä sen kautta välitetään vastuullisuuden arvoja ja tietoa tuleville ammattilaisille. Vastuullisuusteemojen integrointi osaksi opetusta tukee opiskelijoiden valmiuksia kohdata monimutkaisia ympäristö- ja yhteiskunnallisia haasteita. Opettajien kestävän kehityksen osaamistasolla näyttäisi olevan selkeä yhteys siihen, kuinka hyvin vastuullisuusteemoja pystytään sisällyttämään opetukseen. Mitä syvällisempää opettajan ymmärrys kestävyyden eri ulottuvuuksista on, sitä helpommin ja kattavammin hän kykenee käsittelemään niitä osana opetustaan. Tämä korostaa tarpeita panostaa opettajien osaamisen kehittämiseen. Kykytason mittaaminen tarjoaa korkeakouluille tietoa nykytilasta ja ohjaa kehittämistoimia, mahdollistaen strategisen osaamisen johtamisen. Pelkän osaamisen lisäksi myös opettajan henkilökohtainen kiinnostus ja motivaatio vaikuttavat merkittävästi siihen, kuinka vastuullisuutta opetuksessa toteutetaan. Kestävyysaiheiden sisällyttäminen opetukseen edellyttää työympäristöä, jossa teemat koetaan merkityksellisiksi. Henkilöstön innostaminen ja sitouttaminen ovat avainasemassa, jotta vastuullisuudesta tulee luonteva osa niin opetusta kuin opiskelijoiden ammatillista identiteettiä.
