During secondary school, choices regarding the future become increasingly significant, and academic performance plays a growing role in determining future educational opportunities. At the same time, young people are spending more time on social media, which may reduce time available for schoolwork and shorten sleep duration \u2013 both of which can contribute to greater perceived pressure. The purpose of this study was to examine whether problematic social media use is associated with perceived schoolwork pressure. The study also explored how age, gender, social support, and morning tiredness influenced this association, and whether the connections differ between boys and girls.\n\nThe study was conducted as a cross-sectional survey using data from the 2022 HBSC study. The sample consisted of Finnish 7th and 9th grade students (n=2372). Perceived schoolwork pressure was assessed with the question: \u201cHow much do you feel pressured by schoolwork?\u201d. Problematic social media use was measured using the Social Media Disorder Scale (SMD). Additional variables included age, gender, support from family, teachers, and peers, as well as morning tiredness. The analysis methods included cross-tabulations, Chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression. \n\nAmong Finnish 7th and 9th graders, 20.2 % reported feeling pressured by schoolwork a lot. Girls were more likely than boys to experience high levels of schoolwork pressure. A total of 10.6 % of students were classified as problematic social media users, and 39.3 % were considered at risk. The results indicated a significant association (p<0.001) between problematic social media use and perceived schoolwork pressure among adolescents. Even belonging to the at-risk group for problematic use increased the likelihood of experiencing pressure when looking at the overall sample, though this was not observed in the gender-specific analysis. Morning tiredness and high teacher support weakened the association between social media and perceived pressure. \n\nThe findings suggest that problematic social media use should be addressed as part of efforts to reduce schoolwork pressure in adolescents. Teacher support appeared to act as a potential protective factor against perceived pressure, highlighting the importance of exploring how enhancing teacher support could mitigate schoolwork pressure \u2013 especially among students who are problematic social media users.
