| Summary: | The Interview (2014) päätyi jo ennen julkaisuaan Yhdysvaltojen ja Pohjois-Korean välisen kansainvälisen skandaalin keskipisteeksi. Pohjois-Korea syytti Yhdysvaltoja terrorismin tukemisesta salliessaan elokuvan julkaisun, ja Yhdysvallat syytti Pohjois-Koreaa elokuvan levittäjäyhtiön Sonyn hakkeroinnista. Tämä tutkielma on keskittyy elokuvan epätyypilliseen tapaan kuvata Pohjois-Koreaa: huomio on erityisesti representaatioissa ja poliittisessa satiirissa. Käytän Joseph M. Boggsin ja Dennis W. Petrien elokuva-analyysiä ja erityisesti sen humanistista ja genreen keskittyviä lähestymistapoja soveltuvin osin. Yhdistän tämän metodin elokuvan representationaaliseen ja poliittiseen luentaan. Tutkimuskysymykset ovat: kuinka Pohjois-Korean poliittista järjestelmää representoidaan? Millä tavoin satiiri ja huumori mahdollistavat poliittisen kritiikin Pohjois-Korean diktatuuria kohtaan?
Esittelen analyysin ja diktaattoria satirisoivan esimerkin avulla satiirin perinnettä, joka hyödyntää hauraan maskuliinisuuden karikatyyriä pilkatakseen diktaattoreja. Demonstroin kuinka elokuvassa Kim Jong Unista tehdään ihmiseksi tunnistettava esittämällä hänet salaa amerikkalaismielisenä ja kamppailemassa vaikean isäsuhteen kanssa. Satiirin avulla hänet näytetään perustavanlaatuisesti epäsopivana johtajana, joka pyrkii paikkaamaan seksuaalisuuteensa ja sukupuoleensa liittyvää ahdistusta väkivallalla ja sodalla. Tavallisten kansalaisten representaatiota passiivisina, pysähtyneinä ja toiseutettuina ihmisinä käytetään elokuvassa kritisoimaan Pohjois-Korean hallintoa, joka myös representoidaan naurettavana.
Analyysin avulla näytän kuinka Pohjois-Korean representaatio on monilta osin stereotyyppistä ja toisaalta perinteestä erottuvaa. Elokuva käyttää huumoria liittääkseen negatiiviset asiat suoraan Kimiin ja hänen hallintoonsa tavallisten pohjois-korealaisten sijaan. Lisäksi se esittää miltein huomaamattoman kuvitelman Yhdysvaltojen ja Pohjois-Korean välisestä yhteistyöstä. Huumori mahdollistaa helpomman ja vähemmän epämukavan keskustelun sivuuttamalla raskaammat asiat ja keskittymällä Kimiin ihmisenä ja hallintoon naurettavana rakennelmana, joka voi vahingossa murtua kyvyttömien toimijoiden johdosta.
The Interview (2014) was central in an international scandal between the United States and North Korea even before its release. North Korea accused the US of encouraging terrorism by allowing the release of the film and the US directly accused North Korea of hacking Sony (the film’s distributor). This thesis is interested in the unorthodox take on depicting North Korea, especially the representations and political satire in the film. I utilize a modified version of Joseph M. Boggs and Dennis W. Petrie’s film analysis and its humanistic and genre approaches. I combine these to a representational and political reading of the film. The research questions considered in this work are: how is North Korean regime represented in the film the Interview? How do aspects of satire and humor enable political critique of North Korean dictatorship?
This thesis uses the analysis and an example of previous dictator satire to highlight the existence of a satirical tradition that makes fun of dictators by caricatures of fragile masculinity. I demonstrate how Kim Jong Un is made recognizable as a human by portraying him as secretly pro-American and struggling with “father issues”. Through satire he is positioned as a fundamentally unfit leader, who seeks to remedy anxiety around his sexuality and status as a man with violence and full-scale war. The representations of passivity, stagnation, and othering connected to ordinary North Koreans are used to critique North Korean regime rather than the people. The regime is portrayed as ridiculous.
With the help of my analysis, I demonstrate how the representation of North Korea is stereotypical in many aspects while in some it does differ from the established representations. The film uses humor to attach negative elements to the regime and Kim instead of North Korea or its people as a whole. It also subtly imagines a partnership between the US and North Korea. Humor enables a more palatable and less uncomfortable conversation by ignoring heavier elements and focusing on Kim as a human and the regime as ridiculous and ready to be accidentally taken down by incompetent people.
