However, despite these guidelines swimming proficiency among sixth graders has declined and student participation is perceived to be low. This study examines students’ participation levels, reasons for absence and teachers’ strategies to support participation in aquatic education in lower and upper secondary schools. A quantitative survey was conducted in spring 2021 among physical education teachers (n = 229) with analysis focused on those teaching aquatic lessons. Open responses were inductively categorized and converted into variables for statistical analysis. Key barriers to participation included body insecurity, poor swimming skills, menstruation, and health issues. Teachers' main strategies to increase participation included discussions with students, implementing engaging lesson content and ensuring privacy in dressing and shower rooms. Participation rates declined from 77 % in seventh grade to 64 % in upper secondary school. Participation rates increased when ninth graders were provided with more privacy in dressing rooms and showers. Prioritizing skill development in early grades, promoting body-positive education and addressing privacy concerns could improve participation. Further research should explore students’ perspectives. Uimaopetus on keskeinen osa liikuntakasvatusta, edistäen sekä elintärkeitä uimataitoja että oppilaiden hyvinvointia. Suomen perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelma velvoittaa kouluja tarjoamaan vuosittain uimaopetusta. Tästä huolimatta, kuudesluokkalaisten uimataito on heikentynyt merkittävästi. Oppilaiden osallistumisen uimaopetukseen koetaan myös olevan vähäistä. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan oppilaiden osallistumistasoa, poissaolojen syitä sekä opettajien käyttämiä keinoja osallistumisen tukemiseksi yläkouluissa ja lukioissa. Aineisto kerättiin kvantitatiivisella kyselytutkimuksella keväällä 2021, ja siihen vastasi 229 liikunnanopettajaa. Analyysiin sisällytettiin ne vastaajat, jotka opettavat uimaopetusta. Avoimet vastaukset luokiteltiin induktiivisesti ja muunnettiin tilastolliseen analyysiin soveltuviksi muuttujiksi. Merkittävimmät osallistumisen esteet olivat kehollinen epävarmuus, heikko uimataito, kuukautiset ja terveydelliset syyt. Opettajien yleisimmät keinot osallistumisen edistämiseksi olivat keskustelut oppilaiden kanssa, opetussisältöjen mielekkyyden lisääminen sekä yksityisyyden takaaminen pukeutumis- ja peseytymistiloissa. Osallistumisprosentti laski seitsemännellä luokalla 77 prosentista lukiossa 64 prosenttiin. Uimataidon kehittämiseen alakouluissa tulisi keskittyä enemmän, jotta uintipätevyys yläkouluun siirtyessä olisi parempi. Lisäksi yläkoulun ja lukion uintituntien osallistumista voisi parantaa tukemalla kehopositiivista opetusta sekä puuttumalla yksityisyyteen liittyviin haasteisiin. Jatkotutkimuksissa tulisi syventää ymmärrystä myös oppilaiden näkökulmasta.
