The media framing of Russophone rock is based on political implications and stereotypes connected to the Soviet Union and the Russophone world. I used the concept of the imaginary East to describe the way Americans often view the Soviet Union and the post-communist East. This framework is built around the beliefs associated with states and people in the Russophone world, most notably Russia and Russians. It is a world divided into two distinct parts: authoritarian elites that oppress citizens and dissidents dissatisfied with their leaders and hungry for Western values. The US media tends to portray rock musicians as symbols of Westernization. It has often incorrectly framed the state and musicians as adversaries, creating a dichotomy of rebellious musicians versus a despotic state. \nDuring the late 1980s, when the USSR was undergoing reforms, rockers served as micro-level examples of macro-level changes, proving that the Communist enemy was genuinely going through liberalization. In the 1990s, Russia seemed to embrace democracy and a market economy. Bands that now received the most media attention highlighted the values of the new era and turned the Soviet past into a caricature, using the concept of the imaginary East as a part of their marketing strategy. In the early 2000s, Russia was integrated into the global popular culture discourse. The clearest example of this was the pop-rock group t.A.T.u., which is a rare example of a Russophone band that was not first and foremost defined by its country of origin. Political framing re-emerged in the early 2010s, when the relationship between the U.S. and Russia deteriorated. As rockers were framed as symbols of dissidence, complex issues about Russian society were reduced to binary categories, such as Pussy Riot and democracy versus Vladimir Putin and oppression. The Russian attack against Ukraine in 2022 and the ongoing war have kept rockers in the news. Now, Ukrainian music and culture have been recognized as their own separate entity. \nThe politicization of reception has been a double-edged sword for artists. On the one hand, it has brought them much media attention. On the other hand, it has taken attention away from their music.", "language": "en", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.provenance", "value": "Submitted by Paivi Vuorio (paelvuor@jyu.fi) on 2025-05-26T10:33:17Z\nNo. of bitstreams: 0", "language": "en", "element": "description", "qualifier": "provenance", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.provenance", "value": "Made available in DSpace on 2025-05-26T10:33:17Z (GMT).
