The aim of the study was to investigate the level of water competence among fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. The study also examined differences between grades and whether there was gender-based differences in various areas. Data collection was carried out in the autumn 2024, targeting 56 students aged 10–12. Water competence skills were observed during physical education lessons using the SCAS (Swimming Competence Assessment Scale) instrument. The scale includes six areas: entering the water, swimming on the front, diving, floating on the front and back, swimming on the back, and exiting the water. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS software, employing tools such as cross-tabulations, Fisher-Freeman-Halton exact test, t-test, and Mann-Whitney test. The results showed significant differences among the grades in all areas except exiting the water. Fifth graders generally displayed the strongest skills, while fourth graders exhibited the weakest water competence. The areas where all grades faced challenges and showed weaker skills included front and back swimming and floating. No significant gender-based differences were observed except in entering the water, where boys had slightly stronger skills than girls. Water competence tends to improve with age, although age is not the sole factor influencing it. A child’s experiences and parental attitudes play a crucial role in the development of water competence. The findings indicated that swimming and floating were the most difficult skills for everyone, possibly because these are complex and require more practice in swimming lessons. This is a relatively new topic and warrants further research, but this study provides a glimpse into the state of water competence and its potential development. Vattenkompetens är en viktig färdighet som består av förmågan att hantera och röra sig i vattenmiljöer på ett säkert sätt. Vattenkompetensen innehåller också kunskapsdelar för att bättre förstå hur och varför röra sig på ett visst sätt i vattenmiljöer och kunna känna igenom risker och faror i olika miljöer. Syfte med studien var att undersöka hurudana vattenkompetens färdigheter fjärde-, femte- och sjätteklassister hade. Studien undersökte skillnader mellan årskurserna samt om det fanns könsskillnader i olika delområden. Datainsamlingen genomfördes på hösten 2024, med en målgruppen på 56 elever i åldrarna 10–12. Vattenkompetens färdigheterna observerades på idrottslektionerna med hjälp av mätinstrumentet SCAS (swimming competence assessment scale). Mätaren innehöll sex olika delområden: gå ner i vattnet, simning på mage, dykning, flyta på mage och rygg, simning på rygg och gå upp ur vattnet. Dataanalyseringen gjordes på SPSS-programvara och tester som gjordes var korsningstabeller, Fisher-freeman-halton exact test, t-test samt Mann-Whitney test. Resultaten påvisade signifikanta skillnader mellan årskurserna i alla delområden förutom uppstigningen från vattnet. Femteklassisterna hade generellt de starkaste färdigheterna medan fjärdeklassisterna hade de svagaste vattenkompetens färdigheter. De delområden som alla årskurser hade utmaningar i och svagast färdigheter var simning på mage och rygg samt att flyta. Inga signifikanta könsskillnader uppkom förutom i nedsänkning i vattnet, där pojkarna hade en aning starkare färdigheter än vad flickorna hade. Vattenkompetensfärdigheter tenderar att öka genom åldern men den är inte den enda faktorn som påverkar vattenkompetensen. Barnets erfarenheter och föräldrarnas attityd spelar en stor roll hur barnets vattenkompetens utvecklas. Resultaten visade att simningen och flytningen var svårast för alla, vilket kan förklaras av att dessa färdigheterna är komplexa och kräver mera träning i simundervisningen. Ämne är relativt nytt och kräver ytterligare forskning, men denna studiet kan ge en liten inblick hur vattenkompetensen ser ut och kan utvecklas.
