Jotta kielt\u00e4 voi oppia tehokkaasti, on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 altistua autenttiselle kielelle monipuolisesti. T\u00e4h\u00e4n kuuluu lukeminen, kuunteleminen ja n\u00e4iden yhdistyminen esimerkiksi television katselussa tekstitysten kanssa. Kielitaito voi olla ratkaisevan t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 ja merkityksellist\u00e4 maahanmuuttajille, joille paikallisen kielen oppiminen voi toimia siltana uuteen kulttuuriin. Suomessa maahanmuutto on lis\u00e4\u00e4ntynyt viimeisen 30 vuoden aikana huomattavasti, mink\u00e4 my\u00f6t\u00e4 suomi toisena kielen\u00e4 -opetus on yh\u00e4 merkityksellisemm\u00e4ss\u00e4 asemassa.\n\nT\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkielmassa pyrittiin selvitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n kuinka paljon ja mill\u00e4 tavoin aikuiset maahanmuuttajat, jotka opiskelevat suomea toisena kielen\u00e4 (S2), altistuvat suomen kielelle formaalin luokkahuoneopetuksen ulkopuolella. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkielma tarkastelee englannin kielen n\u00e4kyvyytt\u00e4 S2-oppijoiden arjessa sek\u00e4 sen mahdollisia vaikutuksia suomen kielen oppimiseen. \n\nAineisto ker\u00e4ttiin s\u00e4hk\u00f6isell\u00e4 kyselyll\u00e4, joka jaettiin s\u00e4hk\u00f6postin v\u00e4lityksell\u00e4 keskeisille kotoutumiskoulutusta j\u00e4rjest\u00e4ville tahoille sek\u00e4 useille S2-opetusta j\u00e4rjest\u00e4ville oppilaitoksille ymp\u00e4ri Suomea. Kyselyyn vastasi 203 aikuista maahanmuuttajaa, jotka opiskelevat suomea toisena kielen\u00e4. Kysymykset koostuivat monivalintakysymyksist\u00e4 sek\u00e4 avoimista kysymyksist\u00e4 ja niit\u00e4 tarkasteltiin sek\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llisen ett\u00e4 laadullisen temaattisen analyysin keinoin.\n\nTulosten mukaan suomen kielelle altistutaan luokkahuoneen ulkopuolella jokseenkin v\u00e4h\u00e4n, mutta sen koetaan silti usein olevan hy\u00f6dyllist\u00e4. Toisaalta useat vastaajat kokivat suomen olevan jopa tarpeetonta suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa p\u00e4rj\u00e4\u00e4miselle. Englannin rooli oli t\u00e4ss\u00e4 yhteydess\u00e4 keskeinen ja sen koettiin olevan riitt\u00e4v\u00e4 ty\u00f6skentelyyn ja jokap\u00e4iv\u00e4isiin kanssak\u00e4ymisiin. Vastaajat kokivat suomea ensikielen\u00e4 puhuvien asenteet mahdollisesti heikkoa suomen kielen tasoa kohtaan turhauttavina. T\u00e4m\u00e4n lis\u00e4ksi he kokivat, ett\u00e4 natiivit puhujat toistuvasti pyrkiv\u00e4t vaihtamaan keskustelukielen englantiin.
