Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Simbergin teoksia, joissa esiintyy h\u00e4nen n\u00e4kemyksens\u00e4 kuoleman personifikaatiosta eli luurankohahmosta. Symbolistien tavoin Simbergi\u00e4 kiinnosti unien ja n\u00e4kym\u00e4tt\u00f6m\u00e4n maailman kuvaaminen, mik\u00e4 k\u00e4y ilmi h\u00e4nen teoksistaan. Simbergin taiteessa ilmenee mystinen ja tuonpuoleinen hahmo, Kuolema, joka sai taitelijan k\u00e4siss\u00e4 oman tulkintansa. Tutkimus kuuluu taidehistorian ja historian tutkimusalaan, ja tutkimuskysymykset ovat seuraavat: Mitk\u00e4 tekij\u00e4t ovat vaikuttaneet Simbergin taiteen kuolemahahmon visuaaliseen ulkomuodon kehitykseen? Onko Simbergin teosten kuolema representaatiossa yht\u00e4l\u00e4isyyksi\u00e4 tai eroavaisuuksia eurooppalaisen vanhan taiteen luurankokuvastoon? Mink\u00e4laiseksi Simberg kuvaa luurankohahmoa teoksissaan? Mit\u00e4 luuranko symboloi ja mik\u00e4 on sen merkitys tutkimuksessa k\u00e4sitelt\u00e4viss\u00e4 teoksissa? \n\nTutkimus on laadullinen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysi, jossa tutkimusmenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynnet\u00e4\u00e4n Roelof van Straten uudistamaa Erwin Panofskyn klassikkoteokseen Studies in Iconology (1939) pohjautuvaa ikonologian tulkintamallia. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkimusmenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynnet\u00e4\u00e4n suoranaista intervisuaalista eli kuvienv\u00e4list\u00e4 tarkastelua aineistoon. Intervisuaalisessa tarkastelussa ovat Simbergin teosten ja samankaltaisten kuvatyyppien v\u00e4liset yhteydet. Tutkimuksessa liitet\u00e4\u00e4n Simbergin teokset osaksi kuoleman kuvausperinteen jatkumoa. Tutkimusaineistona on yhteens\u00e4 kuusitoista Simbergin erilaisin tekniikoin tekem\u00e4\u00e4 teosta vuosien 1895\u20131906 v\u00e4lilt\u00e4. \n\nMaisteritutkielman tutkimustuloksena nousee esiin, ett\u00e4 Hugo Simbergin Kuolema-hahmon visuaalinen ulkomuoto on saanut vaikutteita niin eurooppalaisen kuolemakuvaston kuvaperinteest\u00e4 kuin taiteilijan omista henkil\u00f6kohtaisista kokemuksista sek\u00e4 taitelijan mielikuvitusmaailman aineksista. Lis\u00e4ksi voidaan huomata, ett\u00e4 Simbergin opintomatkat ja taitelijan t\u00e4rkeimm\u00e4t ihmissuhteet muovasivat niin taitelijan ajatuksia kuin kuvamaailmaa. Simberg rakensi omalaisen ja henkil\u00f6kohtaisen Kuolema-hahmo kuvastonsa, jossa Kuolema n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyy el\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 ja tuntevana olentona. The study focuses on works in which Simberg depicts his vision of the personification of death, represented as a skeletal figure. In line with the Symbolist movement, Simberg was intrigued by dreams and the invisible world and that interest clearly reflected in his art. Simberg presents a mystical, otherworldly figure, Death, which he interpreted in his own unique manner. The thesis is within the disciplines of art history and history, and is guided by the following research questions: What factors influenced the visual development of the death figure in Simberg\u2019s art? To what extent does Simberg\u2019s representation of death resemble or differ from the skeletal imagery found in European art history? How does Simberg characterize the skeletal figure in his works? What does the skeleton symbolize, and what is its significance within the analyzed works?\n\nThe study is a qualitative content analysis that applies a modified iconological interpretation model based on Erwin Panofsky\u2019s seminal work Studies in Iconology (1939), as revised by Roelof van Straten. The study also uses intervisual analysis, examining the visual relationships between Simberg\u2019s works and related image types. Through this approach, Simberg\u2019s works are positioned within the broader continuum of death imagery traditions. The material consists of sixteen artworks utilizing a variety of techniques created by Simberg between 1895 and 1906. \n\nThe findings of this thesis indicate that the visual form of Simberg\u2019s Death figure draws from both the imagery of European death iconography and the artist\u2019s personal experiences and imaginative vision. Furthermore, Simberg\u2019s study trips and significant personal relationships played a crucial role in shaping both his worldview and artistic imagery. Simberg constructed a distinctive and personal representation of Death, portrayed as a sentient, emotion-ally resonant being. He employed stylistic elements of Symbolism and drew inspiration from medieval imagery as well as ancient and medieval death symbolism. His depictions of Death also reflect the late 19th-century Symbolists\u2019 fascination with mysticism and esotericism. The results of the study suggest that Simberg\u2019s works can be interpreted as part of the long tradition of death representation in art.
