The purpose of this master\u2019s thesis is to investigate how the organizers of the World Rally Championship create, implement and assess their environmental sustainability strategies. This research will explore the factors, including barriers and enablers, that influence the formation and implementation of environmental sustainability strategies. The research has been conducted in co-operation with WRC Promoter GmbH.\n\nThe theoretical framework of the study consists of the factors that influence the environmental sustainability strategy of an event organizer. The framework includes internal objectives, actions and indicators of the organization, as well as the main external stakeholders regarding environmental sustainability. This study was conducted as a qualitative multi-case study. The data was collected through thematic interviews with seven WRC event organizers who work on environmental sustainability of their events. The interview data was analyzed using a theory inspired and content analysis. \n\nThe results of this research indicate that all event organizers have some kind of environmental sustainability strategy, but the scope of its practical implementation differs significantly. In the best case, a larger team is involved in the strategy's creation and implementation. Also, the implementation is in line with the objectives defined in the strategy. However, in some cases the assessment does not directly meet the objectives due to the complex nature of the event and the limited competence of the organization or its\u2019 stakeholders.\n \nIn conclusion, this research highlights the need to develop environmental sustainability strategies in closer co-operation with the key stakeholders of the event. In addition, the use of indicators that assess the implementation of the strategy needs to be clarified and deepened. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena monitapaustutkimuksena. Aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin teemahaastatteluilla, joihin osallistui seitsem\u00e4n WRC tapahtumaj\u00e4rjest\u00e4j\u00e4\u00e4, jotka ty\u00f6skentelev\u00e4t heid\u00e4n tapahtuman ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6vastuullisuuden parissa. Haastatteluaineiston analyysiss\u00e4 k\u00e4ytettiin teoriaohjaavaa ja aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6ist\u00e4 analyysi\u00e4. \n\nTutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 kaikilla tapahtumanj\u00e4rjest\u00e4jill\u00e4 on ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6vastuullisuusstrategia, mutta sen k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n toteutuksen laajuus vaihtelee merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti. Parhaimmillaan strategian luomiseen ja toteutukseen osallistuu suurempi tiimi, ja tehdyt toimet vastaavat strategiassa m\u00e4\u00e4riteltyj\u00e4 tavoitteita. Heikoimmillaan tehdyt toimenpiteet eiv\u00e4t vastaa suoraan tavoitteita kompleksisen tapahtuman luonteen sek\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4isen organisaation tai sidosryhmien kompetenssin takia. \n\nJohtop\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6ksen\u00e4 tutkimus korostaa tarvetta luoda ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6vastuullisuusstrategiat jatkossa entist\u00e4 tiiviimm\u00e4ss\u00e4 yhteisty\u00f6ss\u00e4 tapahtuman keskeisten sidosryhmien kanssa.
