Naisurheilijat ovat kohonneessa riskiss\u00e4 luuston haurastumiselle sek\u00e4 rasitusmurtumille miesurheilijoihin verrattuna. T\u00e4m\u00e4n pro gradu -tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, onko veren Dvitamiinipitoisuus yhteydess\u00e4 luuntiheyteen ja rasitusmurtumiin suomalaisilla naisurheilijoilla sek\u00e4 miten kehonkoostumuksen muuttujat vaikuttavat t\u00e4h\u00e4n yhteyteen. Tutkimuksessa on hy\u00f6dynnetty Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston Monitoring Injury and Illness in Athletes (MIIA) -tutkimuksen sek\u00e4 Suhteellinen energianvaje urheilijoilla (NoREDS) -tutkimuksen aineistoja. Tutkittavat olivat 18\u201335-vuotiaita kansallisen tai kansainv\u00e4lisen tason naisurheilijoita. Analyysiss\u00e4 oli 234 tutkittavaa, jotka edustivat 18 eri urheilulajia. Tutkittavilta mitattiin veren 25(OH)D-pitoisuus verin\u00e4ytteest\u00e4, jolla kartoitettiin D-vitamiinipitoisuutta. Luuntiheyden ja kehonkoostumuksen selvitt\u00e4misess\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynnettiin kaksienergisen r\u00f6ntgens\u00e4teen absorptiometriaa. Kehonkoostumuksen mittareina olivat luun mineraalitiheys ja sen ik\u00e4\u00e4n ja sukupuoleen sidottu viitearvo, kehon prosentuaalinen rasvatonmassa sek\u00e4 rasvaprosentti ja BMI. Tiedot rasitusmurtumahistoriasta sek\u00e4 syntym\u00e4ajasta ker\u00e4ttiin kyselylomakkeen avulla. Muuttujien v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 yhteyksi\u00e4 tarkasteltiin korrelaatiokertoimien avulla, Mann-Withney\u2019n U-testill\u00e4 ja bin\u00e4\u00e4risell\u00e4 logistisella regressioanalyysill\u00e4. Tulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 60 % tutkimuksen naisurheilijoista D-vitamiinitasot olivat tavoitetasolla (<-1), eik\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4 D-vitamiinipitoisuuden ja luuntiheyden v\u00e4lill\u00e4 tutkimuksessa havaittu (p=0,783). Tutkituista 24 % oli ollut rasitusmurtuma tai sen esiaste historiassa. Vaikka korkeat D-vitamiinitasot liittyiv\u00e4t liev\u00e4sti korkeampaan rasitusmurtumariskiin, yhteys oli heikko (p=0,034). Kun kehonkoostumuksen muuttujat otettiin huomioon, D-vitamiinitasojen ja rasitusmurtumahistorian v\u00e4lill\u00e4 ei havaittu tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4. Tutkimuksen perusteella naisurheilijoilla D-vitamiinilla ei ole tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4 luuntiheyteen, ja yhteys historiassa esiintyneisiin rasitusmurtumiin on vain marginaalinen. Luotettavia johtop\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6ksi\u00e4 rasitusmurtumien osalta on haastavaa tehd\u00e4, johtuen tutkimuksen retrospektiivisest\u00e4 n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta rasitusmurtumien osalta. While the relationship between vitamin D and bone health has been extensively studied, research on female athletes regarding its connection to bone density and stress fractures is limited. Female athletes are at a higher risk of bone fragility and stress fractures compared to male athletes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether vitamin D levels in blood are associated with bone density and stress fractures in Finnish female athletes, and how body composition variables influence this relationship.\nThe study utilizes data from the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4\u2019s Monitoring Injury and Illness in Athletes (MIIA) -study and the Nutritional Energy Deficiency in Sport (NoREDS) -study. The participants were 18-35-year-old national- or international-level female athletes. The analysis included 234 athletes from 18 different sports. 25(OH)D concentration in blood was measured from blood samples to assess vitamin D levels. Bone density and body composition were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The body composition indicators included bone mineral density and its age- and sex-adjusted reference values, percentage of lean body mass, body fat percentage, and BMI. Data on stress fracture history and date of birth were collected via a questionnaire. The relationships between the variables were examined using correlation coefficients, Mann-Withney\u2019n U-test and binary logistic regression analysis.\nThe results showed that the female athletes in the study had somewhat good vitamin D levels, although one-third had concentrations below the target level (<75 nmol/l). Bone density was at a good level, and no significant relationship was found between vitamin D levels and bone density (p=0.783). Among the participants, 24% had a history of stress fractures or their precursors. Although higher vitamin D levels were slightly associated with an increased risk of stress fractures, the association was weak (p = 0.034). When body composition variables were considered, no statistically significant association was observed between vitamin D levels and a history of stress fractures.\n\nBased on this study, vitamin D levels were not statistically significantly associated with bone density in female athletes, and the relationship between past stress fractures and vitamin D levels was marginal. Drawing reliable conclusions about stress fractures is challenging due to the retrospective nature of this study concerning stress fractures.
