My goal was to identify the challenges of the translation and reception of Hungarian literary works on different levels. Through case studies – ranging from the analysis of the English translation of a Hungarian novel to the comparison of the reception or lack thereof of two Hungarian works in the international scene – I investigated the reasons why certain works are translated and well received while others are not. I also mapped some of the social and institutional networks that are involved in the process of the selection, translation, publication and marketing of literary works, and analysed the habitus of translators with the aim to find out whether translating from the hyper-central to a peripheral language requires different attitudes than the opposite. I used various methods, from literary and translation criticism to sociological methods – including Bourdieu’s field theory and qualitative research methods –, as well as my own experience in the publishing industry, to chart this field and establish the reasons for the position of Hungarian literary fiction in the international scene. Although my topic is highly specific in terms of language and geographical area, these articles have wider implications as they lay bare the conditions of the circulation of literary works – in terms of cultural politics, economic and political power relations – from the periphery to the centre.
dc.description.provenance
Made available in DSpace on 2025-03-31T06:32:32Z (GMT).
