This is of importance to contemporary use of English by speakers from all language backgrounds.
A large part of this dissertation is conceptual in nature. At the outset, the work advocates for a shift away from including ‘native speaker’ (EL1) norms and references in international tests of English an argument that draws on the context of English in higher education in anglophone countries and which can be extrapolated to other ELF contexts. Two key recommendations are for comprehensibility to be better understood, particularly in the context of ELF, and for research into comprehensibility to include EL2 (‘non-native’ speakers) as listeners and contributors to the construct.
In response to these recommendations, the wider dissertation investigates comprehensibility through the literature, a review of how it is reflected in language tests and proficiency frameworks, and an empirical study. An alternative view on comprehensibility with specific reference to the ELF context is put forward, including a worked example of how pronunciation is situated in this broader perspective on the comprehensibility construct. Definitions of comprehensibility and intelligibility are reviewed and an approach to these is put forward. A further output of the conceptual sections of the dissertation is an initial validity argument framework that can be applied to international tests of English language in the era of ELF.
The empirical study heeds the call for EL2 listeners to contribute to the construct and, more specifically, to the inventory of phonological correlates of comprehensibility, finding that EL1 and EL2 listeners perceive and evaluate comprehensibility differently.
The dissertation has implications for English language test development and delivery, for teaching and learning, as well as for research into comprehensibility of English in the ELF age.
dc.description.provenance
Made available in DSpace on 2025-03-28T07:53:17Z (GMT).
