They allow individuals to immerse themselves in the progression of the story and the experiences of its characters. This study examines how modifying the events of a story at different phases influences readers\u2019 evaluations of the protagonist\u2019s emotional states and their own emotional experiences.\nThe hypothesis posited that changes in story events would reflect in readers\u2019 emotional appraisals and that these appraisals would vary as the story progressed. The theoretical foundation of the study primarily comprised appraisal theory and theory of mind, while it also incorporated core affect theory and other perspectives addressing the dynamics of emotions and appraisal processes.\nThe research material consisted of four experimental stories where the events and the protagonist\u2019s goal relevance, urgency, and coping potential were manipulated. Participants (N = 40) were recruited via the Prolific platform, and their emotional appraisals were measured using surveys progressing alongside the stories. The data were analyzed using multilevel models, which allowed for a dynamic examination of the evolution of emotional appraisals.\nThe results indicated that the story events and their emotional framing significantly influenced readers\u2019 emotional appraisals. Story 4 stood out as it elicited the strongest emotional appraisals when the protagonist faced situations with low coping potential and high urgency.
