Sulfaatit alentavat veden pH:ta, lis\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t raskasmetallien liikkuvuutta, rehev\u00f6itt\u00e4v\u00e4t vesist\u00f6j\u00e4 sek\u00e4 ovat vesieli\u00f6ille myrkyllisi\u00e4 suurina pitoisuuksina. Sulfaatin myrkyllisyys vesieli\u00f6ille perustuu veden kohonneeseen ionipitoisuuteen. Tutkimukseni tarkoitus oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 sulfaatin vaikutus jokikutuisen It\u00e4meren vaellussiian (Coregonus lavaretus) poikasten kasvuun ja elossa s\u00e4ilymiseen murtovedess\u00e4. Joessa makeassa vedess\u00e4 kuoriutuvat poikaset kulkeutuvat nopeasti rannikolle jokisuistoihin ja jatkavat kehittymist\u00e4 siell\u00e4 murtovedess\u00e4. Tutkimuksessa seurattiin kalojen elossa s\u00e4ilymist\u00e4, pituutta, m\u00e4rk\u00e4- sek\u00e4 kuivapainoa ja kuivapainon osuutta m\u00e4rk\u00e4painosta. Vastakuoriutuneita siianpoikasia altistettiin kuudelle eri sulfaattipitoisuudelle 28 p\u00e4iv\u00e4n ajan. Kokeissa k\u00e4ytettyjen sulfaattipitoisuuksien vaihteluv\u00e4li oli 94\u20133300 mg/L. Kokeessa k\u00e4ytetty murtovesi (kontrollipitoisuus 94 mg/L) simuloi poikasten luonnollista elinkiertoa joesta mereen. Sulfate lowers water pH, increases mobility of heavy metals, causes eutrophication and is toxic to water organisms in high concentrations. The toxicity of sulfate is based on elevated ionic concentration. The goal of this research was to assess how sulfate affects the survival and growth of river spawning Baltic Sea whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) larvae in brackish water. Larvae that hatch in fresh water in rivers quickly migrate to estuaries and develop there in brackish water. Endpoint variables in the experiments were survival, length, wet and dry mass and proportion of dry mass compared to wet mass (dry matter). Freshly hatched whitefish larvae were exposed to six different sulfate concentrations for 28 days. Sulfate concentrations used in this research ranged from 94 (control concentration) to 3300 mg/L. Brackish water that was used in this research simulated the larvae's natural life cycle when they migrate from river to the sea. There were no statistically significant differences in length, wet weight or dry weight of the larvae between the treatments. The dry matter of the three highest concentrations differed statistically significantly from control concentration.
