Kyseessä on kyselytutkimus ja vastauksia saatiin Suomen Englannin Opettajat ry:n Facebookin kautta sekä ottamalla sähköpostilla yhteyttä oppilaitoksiin ympäri Suomen. Vastaajia tutkimuksessa oli 59. Aineisto analysoitiin määrällisesti. Kaikki opettajat olivat yhtä mieltä suullisen kielitaidon opettamisen tärkeydestä, mutta tutkielmassa kävi ilmi, että todellisuudessa opettajat eivät kuitenkaan aktiivisesti opeta suullista kielitaitoa tai käytä aikaa tähän. Kokeneimmat opettajat käyttivät eniten englantia opetuksessaan. Lukion opettajat käyttivät teknologiaa monipuolisemmin opetuksessa, kun taas aikuisopetuksessa uutta teknologiaa käytettiin ääntämisen opettamiseen. Yllättäen lukio-opettajien keskuudessa suullista kielitaitoa arvioitiin vain vähän. Lisäkoulutus erilaisten suullisen kielitaidon arvioinnin tavoista voisi tutkielman perusteella tulla kyseeseen. Suurin osa opettajista antoi jatkuvaa palautetta suullisesta kielitaidosta, mutta on mahdollista, että tämä on tarkoittanut eri asioita eri opettajille. Kysely toteutettiin keväällä 2020 pandemian alkaessa. Jos kysely toistettaisiin nyt, olisi mielenkiintoista nähdä miten pandemia ja teknologian kehittyminen on neljässä vuodessa vaikuttanut suullisen kielitaidon opetukseen. The purpose of this master's thesis was to find out Upper Secondary School and Adult Education teachers’ views and practices about teaching English oral skills. Adult education has not been studied extensively, especially with regard to teaching oral skills. The participants of the study were asked how much and in which ways they teach oral skills. The views of the two teacher groups were compared. In addition, the ways of giving feedback and the different ways of assessment of oral skills were examined. This study was conducted in the form of a questionnaire. The responses were obtained through the Facebook page of The Association of Teachers of English in Finland. Additional responses were received by contacting Upper Secondary schools and Adult Education Centers all over Finland via email. There were 59 respondents in this study. The data was analyzed quantitatively. All teachers agreed on the importance of teaching oral skills. However, the study revealed that in reality the teachers do not actively teach oral skills or dedicate time to that. The most experienced teachers used English the most when they taught. Upper Secondary School teachers used technology more extensively in their teaching whereas Adult Education teachers mainly made use of technology when teaching pronunciation. Perhaps surprisingly, oral skills were assessed only a little among Upper Secondary School teachers. On the basis of this study, further education on different ways of assessing oral skills could prove useful. Most teachers gave continuous feedback on oral skills, but it should be taken into consideration that continuous feedback could be interpreted differently by different teachers. The survey was conducted in the spring of 2020 just as the pandemic was starting. If the survey was repeated now, it would be interesting to see how the pandemic and the development of technology in four years have affected the teaching of oral skills.
